THE AUTHOR

Charles Roger Hargreaves was born to parents Alfred Reginald Hargreaves and Ethel Mary Hargreaves on May 9th 1935 in a private hospital at 201 Bath Road, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire UK. Hargreaves would grow up on Halifax Road in Hartshead Moor, Cleckheaton of which there is now a commemorative blue plaque on the building.

In 1971 whilst working as a creative director at a London Firm, Hargreaves wrote the first Mr Men book, Mr Tickle. After the initial difficulty in finding a publisher, the books became an instant success selling a million copies in three years.

Hargreaves and his family lived in Guernsey between 1975 and 1982, moving and settling at Sussex House Farm near Cowden, Kent not long afterwards. Following a stroke Roger Hargreaves died on September 11th 1988 at the age of 53 in the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Royal Tumbridge Wells.

Adam Hargreaves (Born on June 18th 1963), the son of Roger Hargreaves and supposed inspiration for the first book Mr Tickle, followed his fathers footsteps into writing and illustration and when his father had passed, Adam stepped up and continued writing for the Mr Men and Little Miss series.

In April 2004, Roger Hargreaves widow Christine sold the rights to the Mr Men character to Chorion a UK based Entertainment group for 28 Million pounds. In 2011 Chiron sold Mr Men and its associated merchandise business to Japan based business Sanrio.

On March 4th 2021, Roger Hargreaves was posthumously awarded a gold Blue Peter Badge.
