Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the Christmas decoration known as The Christmas Gonks.
WHAT IS A GONK?
Gonks are quirky gnome like creatures with long bushy beards and long knitted hats. They are inspired by Gnomes and Hobgoblins found in Scandinavian and Nordic mythology and are considered to be the Nordic version of Santa Claus.
According to folklore, the Gonks would take likings to houses during the winter season and if they were treated well they would protect the house and family, bringing magic and good fortune. However if the Gonks felt disrespected, they would be mischievous and play numerous tricks. An old Nordic tradition would be to leave out a bowl of Porridge during winter solstice, so that the Gonk may feast and join in the festivities.
Whilst Gonks are a year round decoration, Christmas seams to be the time of year they pop up in retail stores and with celebs like Stacy Solomon taking a liking to them, their popularity has sky rocketed over the years.... maybe 2023 would be the year, you get one in your own home.
