Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale we heard only her side of the story. But what of her arch-nemesis, the mysterious Witch?, Where did she come from?, Hod did she become so wicked?, And what is the true nature of Evil?.

Wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west, Goodreads page.

The story begins with the Birth of Elphaba Thropp, the daughter of a travelling minister and his wife. Due to being born with green skin, sharp teeth, a savage demeanour and a fear of water, Elphaba has a hard time growing up. It gets worse as she attends university at Shiz due to the political instability around the country, causing Elphaba to go rouge and join an underground terrorist group. Elphaba eventually dies at the hands of Dorothy in Kiamo Ko, having gone there to gain forgiveness from her lovers family and leaving behind a son and her broomstick.

Wicked, is the first in The Wicked Years series and was first published on September 29th 1995 by Regan books and is followed by Son of a Witch, A lion amongst Men and Out of Oz. In 2003 the book was adapted into a musical for the stage simply called Wicked. Said musical has been adapted again alongside the book into movies Wicked: Part One and Wicked: Part Two which will be released in November of 2024 and 2025 respectively.

I love Wicked, however I did see the musical first before I had read the book so it took me a bit of time and a few readings to fully get the story. I highly recommend the book especially if you love the musical and are highly anticipating the subsequent movies coming out. And I give the book an 8/10.
