Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on the well known British Author J. R. R, Tolkien.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien commonly known as J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was an English writer and philologist. He is most well known as being the Author of the high fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Tolkien was born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa to parents Arthur and Mabel Tolkien, he was followed two years later by his brother Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien. During what was meant to be a lengthy visit with family in England, Tolkien's father passed away in South Africa of Rheumatic fever before he could join them resulting in the family of three to remain in England. When Tolkien was twelve his mother passed away due to acute diabetes resulting in Tolkien and his brother to be raised by Father Francis Xavier Morgan, during which time he met his future wife Edith Bratt. Tolkien on the eve of his 21st birthday wrote to her and proposed, the pair later married on March 22nd 1916 in Warrick.
Like many men of his generation Tolkien, with pressure from relatives ended up joining the military and fighting in WW1, though he delayed enlistment until after his gaining his degree. Tolkien joined alongside many of his school friends including those he was part of the Tea Club and Barrovian society with. He was survived where many of his friends did not. After the war and being demobilized from the army Tolkien took a civilian job with the Oxford English Dictionary. Though he ended up being a tutor for students at Oxford university, especially undergraduates from Lady Margaret Hall and St Hughs College. In 1920, Tolkien would go onto become a professor at the University of Leeds.
From 1925 to 1945 Tolkien was the professor of Anglo-Saxon studies with Rawlinson and Bosworth as well as being a fellow of Pembroke College, both being part of the University of Oxford. In 1945, he moved within the university to become both the professor of English language and literature and a Fellow of Merton College. Tolkien held these positions until his retirement in 1959. Tolkien became close friends with C. S. Lewis creator of the chronicles of Narnia, the pair were co-members of the informal literary group The Inklings. On March 26th 1972, Tolkien was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd.
After his death in 1973, Tolkiens son Christopher would go onto publish many of his fathers extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts including The Silmerillion. These works alongside The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings formed a collective body of work about a fantasy world called Arda and within it Middle-Earth. During the 1950's Tolkien had applied the word Legendarium to his large connected body of work.
Whilst many other authors have published fantasy before Tolkien, his success with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings ignited a profound interest within the fantasy genre and ultimately created an avalanche of new fantasy books and Authors. This influence has given him the popular identifier as the “Father” of Modern fantasy Literature and is widely regarded (Correctly so in my words) as one of the most influential authors of all time.
