Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on Lotus Birth.

Lotus Birth or Umbilical Cord Nonseverance – UCNS, is the practice of leaving the umbilical cord uncut after childbirth so that the baby is left attached to the placenta until the cord naturally separates at the umbilicus or as its commonly known as the Belly Button, this usually takes three to ten days depending n the baby. The practise is performed mainly for spiritual purposes, including for the perceived spiritual connection between the placenta and the newborn.

Although Lotus Birth has risen as an alternative birth phenomenon in western medicine, Lotus Births are a rare practice in hospitals and considered risky. The RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) has stated “If left for a period of time after the birth, there is a risk of infection in the placenta which can consequently spread to the baby, the placenta is particularly prone to infection as it contains blood. At the post delivery stage, it has no circulation and is essentially dead tissue” Delayed umbilical severance is common in home births usually at an hour plus. The WHO (World Health Organisation) doesn't support Lotus Birth and recommends delayed cord clamping instead.

In May 2020, The Coroners Court of Victoria concluded that a sixteen hour old baby who'd died of sepsis in the setting of a Lotus Birth. Which had taken place at the Royal children's Hospital in Melbourne Australia in 2017. The investigation identified that the Lotus Birth combined with Vaginal seeding were the most significant and severe risk factors for Sepsis.
