Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Random blog day boo yah. As you should know Fridays is random blog day were we talk anything and everything and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The NICU.

An NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) also known as an ICN (Intensive Care Nursary), is an Intensive Care Unti specifically used for the specialised care of Ill or premature Newborn infants. The NICU is divided into several areas depending on the care needed for the infants, which includes critical care for those who require close monitoring and intervention, an intermediate area for those who are stable but still need some specialised care and an area fro those getting ready to go home but can receive additional care before being discharged.

Neonatal often refers to the first 28 days of life and thanks to Louis Gluck who designed the first American NICU (which opened in October 1960 at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conneticut USA) the NICU has been around since the 1960's. Most NICU's are directed by doctors and nurses who've trained specifically in Neonatal-care and are often supported by resident nurses, doctors and pharmasists. Other Ancillary disiplines and specialists are often available at the larger units.

The term Neonatal comes from Neo which means new and Natal which means pertaining to birth or origin.

Whilst most Hopitals with maternity units will have NICU's one of the most well known is the Dolphin Ward at Great Ormound Street Hospital (GOSH), which is the childrens hospital in London.
