Hey there Earthlings, Alternatives and Trollers. Put down that mouse and lend an ear. Welcome to The Bandersnatch blog where we talk weird, wacky and wondrous. I'm The Bandersnatch and I have no idea what I'm doing.
As you should know Tuesdays is book blog day were we talk about one particular book and pretty much run with it. Today's blog is on The Scarlet Lion by Elizabeth Chadwick.
Following early beginnings as a knight in the English royal household and a champion of the tourneys. William Marshal's prowess and loyalty have been rewarded by the hand in marriage of Isabelle de Clare, heiress to great estates in England, Normandy and Ireland. Now a powerful magnate. William has weathered the difficult years of King Richard's absence on crusade and is currently serving him on campaign in Normandy while Isabelle governs their estates, All the stability William and Isabelle have enjoyed with their young and growing family comes crashing down as Richard dies and his brother John becomes king. Rebellion is stirring throughout the Angevin domains and although John has created William, Earl of Pembroke, the friction between the two men leads William and Isabelle to distance themselves in Ireland. The situation escalates, with John holding their sons as hostages and seizing their English lands. The conflict between remaining loyal and rebelling over injustices committed, threatens to tear apart William and Isabelle's marriage and their family.

I've had a want to read the Scarlet Lion ever since I read the previous book The Greatest Knight also by Elizabeth Chadwick, though it has taken me some time to buy and read the book. I have to admit I struggled to read this one. The writing style, story flow and the shifting around of places in the story was a little jarring and put me off reading the whole book, so it's taken me some time to read it. However despite my hesitation I quite liked the book and as such I give it a 6/10. I do recommend reading it as the follow up to the greatest knight and to those who like reading historical fiction.
William Marshal also known as William The Marshal -born in either 1146 or 1947- was the first Earl of Pembroke. He was an Anglo-Norman soldier and statesman who served 5 English kings Henry 2ndand his sons Henry the “young king”, Richard 1st, John and Johns son Henry 3rd. Marshal spent a good chunk of his younger years living with relatives in Normandy learning to be a knight which he fully became in 1166. He became de-facto Earl of Pembroke when he married Isabel De Clare through he was granted the position properly during the second creation of the Pembroke Earldom in 1199. In 1216 Marshal was appointed protector and regent for the kingdom, for the then 9 year old king Henry 3rd. Before him, Marshals family held a hereditary title of Marshal to the King, which by the time of his father John Marshal had become a recognised position as a chief or master of Marshalcy which involved management over other marshals and functionaries. Having become known as the marshal the function was delegated to more specialised representatives. Thanks to his title of Earl and being known as the Marshal, the Term Earl Marshal was commonly used and later became an established hereditary title in the English peerage. William Marshal died on May 14th 1219 and is buried in Temple Church London.
